Using Comment Spam Extended – Niche Ideas Exposed
A few days ago, I made a post about using spam comments for niche site ideas. The funniest thing happened after making that post and I want to share it with you.
Before I wrote that post, I had upwards of 300 spam comments hitting the Akismet filter every day. If you have had a WordPress blog for any extended period of time, you know the ones that I am talking about. The body of the comment looks a little like this:
This was just a quick screenshot of only one in my Akismet file. Sorry folks, I erased the url under each one as I didn't want to give the spammer the satisfaction of your visit should you have wished to see his/her pages. But normally, under the hyperlinked lines the urls are formatted something like this: [URL=http://mysite.com]insert_anchor_keyword_here[/URL]
You get the idea. These people leave two formats for the hyperlinks in the comment. One is the normal HTML which will hyperlink the site and underneath is the format I just showed you. I am guessing the reason they use the bracket format is in the case they are posting on forums or boards that use BBCode.
At any rate, within 24 hours of making the above mentioned post, nearly all comment spam came to a screaching halt. I'm not kidding. It went from nearly 300 a day down to anywhere from 7-20 a day. I almost began to wonder if there was something wrong with my blog!
The days following were initially nothing but irreputable links. I believe you know the kind I am talking about. However today, many of the ones in the filter were "normal" topics. So in light of what I said in the comments of the other post, I will expose their topics here on the blog.
This post will be updated frequently, so be sure to check back often if you want to see what niches they have page or sites built for. Trust me, it can be very entertaining to see the topics and if you spend some time to do a little research, you might just find a golden nugget or two.
So without further ado, here is the first of what I'm sure will be many updates. If you have any comments, I'd love to hear them. Have fun!

The laterday saints genealogy cracks me up. Members of that religious group are suppose to stay above the board. This principle is reinforced by a slogan burned into the minds at a young age “Choose The Right” or CTR. But, whoever runs that site is not staying above board by any means.

I know, there’s actually a TON of them that crack me up everyday. I just don’t have the time I thought I would to keep updating the list.
You have to admit, it’s a great source of entertainment though.

I whole heartedly agree! I think I will have to start making a graphic of the funniest or strangest spam comment and post it as an ongoing series. I believe that most webmasters would find it a hoot. Maybe we should do something like this together and ask for daily submissions.

What a brilliant idea. Spammers are normally ahead of the curve when it comes to niche marketing so why not build a site in their nice?! Thanks for the tip

I think people tend to try and abuse blogs with the keywordluv and comentluv plug ins for free backlinks. This feature was created to reward readers for leaving relevant discussion not for people to abuse. It is good to see you and others stand up against spammers.

Thanks. You are right. They do tend to abuse them. I don’t mind at all linking out to readers who genuinely have something to say, it’s the others you have to contend with. Thanks for stopping by!

Hey Brian!
Yes, you did run into me in the BANS forum.
You are not going to believe this, but I was just thinking of you last week and nearly sent you an email. What are you up to these days and how are things going? Are you still domaining?
Thanks for letting me know how you found me. I know, I thought this was kind of a funny post myself, but it’s true. I kept getting so mad having to delete all the spam until one day I started to pay a little closer attention. Started thinking, “hey, that’d be a great niche. So would this one, etc., etc.” Then when I ran the research,
whoa did I ever find some true gems.
eBay marketing is still going extremely well. I have since added Amazon via phpZon and Overstock to the mix. The combo of the three has been amazing!
Hope all is well and feel free to drop me a line when you get a minute!
Melissa

What I don’t really get is the 2 URL bit. Anyone that can even see will know it’s spam if it gets flagged. Are there really enough sites that autoapprove to make this worth it? Not mine!

Just read the last Comment Spam / Niche post, and then came to this one. I think it’s hilarious that you’re putting their keywords out for public domain. That’s a great way to stop them in their tracks.
On a side note, my cousin went to Sam Houston State University. lol. I’m not kidding. I didn’t know it was popular enough for spammers to spam.
Email Database (1 comments.) | Mar 19, 2010 | Reply
Yes.. Really i had done it. Also, if we get more than 10 links perday through blog commenter, google may think it is a spam…
